My Calibre

Calibre Audio

The Calibre Audio member portal for listening to audiobooks online as a streaming service.

My Calibre is a bespoke audiobook streaming platform that I built for Calibre Audio, a UK charity providing audiobooks to people who struggle to access print. The platform serves members with sight loss, dyslexia, and physical disabilities, giving them on-demand access to a library of over 21,000 titles.

The site is built with Next.js and designed with accessibility at its core as almost all of Calibre's members have a print disability that makes using a screenreader very important. The site features secure member authentication, audio streaming, an accessible catalogue with browsing by category, author, and narrator, and integration with the ReciteMe accessibility toolbar.

The UI balances a strong brand identity with the clarity and simplicity that the audience requires. The backend is built with Neon and AWS, ensuring a robust and scalable infrastructure to support the growing user base. The project was a rewarding challenge that combined technical development with a deep understanding of the needs of a unique user group, ultimately delivering a platform that enhances accessibility and enriches the lives of its members.
